What
is homecoming?
Homecoming
is a celebration about American football. The tradition comes from
American universities. Every year, the universities ask old students
“to come home” to watch a football game. Today, Homecoming is
important in schools, too.
The
main event
There
is a big football game that everyone watches. American football is
very different from soccer. The players wear shoulder pads and
helmets and they can run with the ball in their hands. The game has
four quarters, which are 15 minutes long. Cheerleaders support the
teams.
Other
celebrations
There
are parades, competitions and marching bands. There is also a
Homecoming dance. At the dance, the students choose the Homecoming
king and queen.
English
slang is cool in American schools
English
slang is now fashionable in American high schools. Many teenagers in
the USA are reading books about an English schoolgirl called Georgia
Nicolson. The books are very popular and now it is cool to use
English slang, because American kids want to talk like the people in
the books. The writer of the books receives thousands of letters from
American teenagers who ask her what the words mean. Now there is a
new dictionary that helps American kids to understand English slang.
